Santa Familia · A Tale of Two Barrios

Santa Familia is Conservatorio's last project inside Panama's Casco Antiguo: sixty apartments raised on the shell of a ruined school, right against a three hundred year old city wall. The film walks back through the twenty years of work that led there, told by the people who did it: Conservatorio's partners, the architect Hildegard Vásquez, the builders, the residents and the artists of the neighbourhood.

The title is the thesis of the project and of the film: this is not the story of a building but of two neighbourhoods meeting. Along the way come the demolition done by hand because no crane was allowed to rise above the cathedral tower, the site that broke ground into the pandemic, the courtyard redrawn from scratch to open it to the sea, and the programmes that hold up the rest: La Manzana, La Quince, and the five metre canvas Chingui painted for the first time in his life.

Santa Familia es el último proyecto de Conservatorio dentro del Casco Antiguo: sesenta apartamentos levantados sobre la carcasa de una escuela en ruinas, al filo de una muralla de trescientos años. La película recorre los veinte años de trabajo que llevaron hasta ahí, contados por quienes lo hicieron: los socios de Conservatorio, la arquitecta Hildegard Vásquez, los constructores, los vecinos y los artistas del barrio.

El título es la tesis del proyecto y también la del documental: no es la historia de un edificio, sino la de dos barrios que se encuentran. Por el camino aparecen la demolición hecha a mano porque ninguna grúa podía asomarse por encima de la torre de la catedral, la obra que arrancó con la pandemia, el patio que se rehízo entero para abrirlo al mar, y los programas que sostienen lo demás: La Manzana, La Quince y el lienzo de cinco metros que Chingui pintó por primera vez en su vida.
